All India Network of NGOs and Individuals working with National and State Human Rights Institutions (AiNNI) has written to President Ram Nath Kovind regarding vacancies in the National Human Rights Commission.

National working secretary of AiNNI Henri Tiphagne has urged the President to intervene to ensure that members of the appointment committee initiate a transparent process that would consider eligible candidates and their record, experience and contributions to human rights.

Disappointed over the inquiry being conducted into the 2018 Thoothukudi firing that claimed the lives of 13 people protesting against Sterlite Copper, Madurai-based NGO People’s Watch has asked the government to constitute a fresh commission of inquiry.

Madurai: The Madras high court has directed the Madurai city commissioner of police to secure and produce four people whowere allegedly responsible for withdrawal of a case filed by a man in connection with the custodial death of his son atAvaniyapuram police station in Madurai district.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court directed the Commissioner of Police, Madurai, to secure and produce before the court four men alleged to be behind the withdrawal of a petition pertaining to the Avaniapuram custodial death case.

A Division Bench of Justices T.S. Sivagnanam and S. Ananthi directed the Commissioner of Police to secure Athi Narayanan, Kathir, Loganathan and Ramesh and produce them before the court. The High Court initiated suo motu proceedings after the petition was withdrawn.

In a major victory to the citizens of Thoothukudi, the Madras High Court has rejected the appeal of the Vedanta group to reopen the Sterlite Copper Smelter plant. The order of the court comes as a major relief as the pollution from the plant has adversely.....
