Indian authorities were openly critical of human rights defenders in 2017, feeding a climate of hostility and violence against them, according to the latest State of the World’s Human Rights report by Amnesty International.

Madurai: Denying allegations that non-official visitors (people appointed to listen to prisoners' grievances) were not appointed in central and women prisons in Tamil Nadu, state's additional director general of police (ADGP) (prisons) C Sylendran Babu said that except some, they have been appointed in other prisons in the state.

The arrest of advocate A. Murugan under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in January 2017 and his prolonged detention since then have been a travesty of justice, a group of human rights activists belonging to different organisations, who spoke to the media here on Saturday, alleged.
The activists also raised concern over inordinate delay in disposing of the advocate’s bail petitions.
