“It is somewhat alarming that the State through its police fired at unarmed protesters and no one is booked some three years after the incident,” the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court observed on Friday on the Thoothukudi police firing incident, in which 13 anti-Sterlite protesters were killed in May 2018.

The Madras High Court on Friday directed the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to submit a copy of its investigation report into the police firing that took place in Thoothukudi in 2018 during the anti-Sterlite protests.

Is that the society that we want to build."
These were among the questions raised by Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee, now sitting at the Madurai bench, when the PIL petition from Henri Tiphagne, an activist, on the matter, came up for hearing today.
