Opinion of UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention over the arrest and detention of Mr. Thirumurgan Gandhi in Tamil Nadu




Madurai: Denying allegations that non-official visitors (people appointed to listen to prisoners' grievances) were not appointed in central and women prisons in Tamil Nadu, state's additional director general of police (ADGP) (prisons) C Sylendran Babu said that except some, they have been appointed in other prisons in the state.

The arrest of advocate A. Murugan under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in January 2017 and his prolonged detention since then have been a travesty of justice, a group of human rights activists belonging to different organisations, who spoke to the media here on Saturday, alleged.

The activists also raised concern over inordinate delay in disposing of the advocate’s bail petitions.

Trichy: At a time when the city is boasting of an open defecation free (ODF) tag and gearing up for Swachh Survekshan 2018, a study conducted by an environmental NGO here has shown that open defecation is the norm in 137 locations spread across 38 wards in the city, that is over 50 per cent of the wards. In a severe blow to the Trichy Corporation which has often been portrayed as the cleanest city in the state after coming in the top 10 for two consecutive years till 2016, the study found that people in about 22 wards had no proper access to public toilets.




TIRUNELVELI: Registering more cases does not ensure justice for victims of usury. "Not only the police, but also the judiciary have an important role in ensuring that usury victims get justice.
