A team of advocates including Henry Tiphagne, Vanchinathan, Selva Gomathy and members of civil societies including People’s Watch, Society for Community Organisation Trust, People’s Right Protection Organisation submitted a petition to Madurai police commissioner J Loganathan on Friday seeking action against the miscreants who vandalised the house of deputy mayor T Nagarajan and tried to hack him a week ago.
The petition was also forwarded to corporation commissioner L Madhubalan and collector M S Sangeetha. The civil society members alleged that the police inspector and sub-inspector attached with the Jaihindpuram station are handling the case in a partial manner and sought the transfer of the officers. They also demanded the transfer of the case to CB-CID. A 24-hour protection was also sought for the deputy mayor.
The petition also sought action against ganja sellers in the city as there is an increase in usage by youngsters and pointed out that the deputy mayor acted against the ganja sales in his ward.
The petitioners called for a meeting of major political parties to discuss the safety of activists in the city. SDPI, VCK, CPM, National Alliance for People’s Movement and 20 other outfits signed the petition.
