An advocate who moved the Madras high court alleging nuisance following the opening of Super Saravana Stores in Madurai on Friday sought for a direction to constitute an expert committee to inspect and submit a report regarding violations in the building. The court was hearing a petition filed by Henri Tiphagne. He also sought to temporarily shut down the shopping complex till the public nuisances due to its functioning, are cleared. The petitioner complained of several nuisances including traffic congestion following the opening of the shopping mall. He said that no prior information was made available to the public on whether the authorities were consulted or approached for the formal orders before the building approval was granted and the final approval for the formal opening was provided. There was not a single flight of emergency stairs clearly visible and made known to visitors to the complex. Referring to the recent incident where a fire broke out in the ninth floor of the complex, Tiphagne sought for an interim direction to constitute an expert committee comprising members including director general of police, fire and rescue services department, south zone inspector general of police, expert from IIT, member secretary of Madurai district legal services authority to inspect and submit a report. Opposing the same, the counsel for the complex submitted that the petition itself was not maintainable. The state submitted that following the accident, the complex has been closed temporarily. Taking cognizance of the submissions, justice K Murali Shankar adjourned the case to March 8 for further hearing.
