A coalition of civil society organisations in Tamil Nadu titled, ‘Coordinating Committee for People’s Inquest into Thoothukudi Police Firing’ organised a People’s Inquest (PI) on June 2-3, 2018 at Thoothukudi and its suburbs, into the targeted killings, arbitrary detentions and torture on May 22, 2018 and thereafter, in Thoothukudi. As per the latest records, 15 protestors were killed and more than a hundred severely injured in protests against the Sterlite Copper plant. May 22, 2018, marked the 100th day of protests against the Sterlite Copper plant.

Demand the immediate closure of the Sterlite copper plant in Thoothukudi

Several organisations gathered here to condemn the police firing during a rally demanding the closure of the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi on Tuesday.

The SOCO Trust’s Managing Trustee A. Mahboob Batcha condemned the firing and claimed that this was a clampdown on democracy.

People’s Watch calls for the order of immediate closure of Sterlite Copper Smelter
Plant No. 1 and for the stoppage of construction at the Copper Smelter Plant No.2, by
the Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy. People’s Watch would like to highlight that
the Chief Minister’s inaction during the 100 day protest and his gross negligence
during the Tuticorin Sterlite Protest has resulted in the loss of over a dozen lives, left
several brutally injured and has caused extensive damage to property.
