The two-member bench of the Supreme Court's verdict that National Green Tribunal (NGT) has no jurisdiction to hear the private copper smelter plant in Thoothukudi against the Tamil Nadu government's order to close down the plant, however, has not given full satisfaction to the anti-Sterlite activists, who feel that they are only halfway through the process of a permanent closure of the plant.
Tuticorin superintendent of police (SP), Murali Rambha, appeared before the Madurai bench of the Madras high court on Wednesday following its directions in response to a petition which sought interim directions to the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to probe illegal detention of anti-Sterlite protestors in Tuticorin district. A division bench of Justice K.K.Sasidharan and Justice P.D.Audikesavalu directed the district police chief to file a counter to the claims against the police personnel under him.

A People’s Inquest (PI) team that completed a two-day inquest into the police firing against protesters opposing the Sterlite plant has held the district administration and the police responsible for the death of 13 persons.
The PI team comprised two retired judges of two High Courts, two retired IAS officers and three retired IPS officers in addition to senior advocates, journalists and social workers.

The National Human Rights Commission’s fact-finding team is expected to start on Sunday its probe into the killing of 13 persons in the police firing during the anti-Sterlite protest that turned violent in Thoothukudi on May 22.
The fact-finding team, comprising a Senior Superintendent of Police, three Deputy Superintendents of Police and an Inspector, is likely to land here on Saturday evening and commence its probe on Sunday.
