Members of various political parties and human rights organisations held a candlelight vigil in Madurai on Monday highlighting the need for protection of electoral democracy and constitutional form of govt ahead of the declaration of Lok Sabha election results on Tuesday. The vigil held in front of Madurai district court saw the participation of members of People’s Watch, VCK, Tamil Puligal Katchi, MDMK, SDPI, SOCO Trust, and Makkal Urimai Pathukappu Iyakkam, among others. The organisations highlighted the need for the protection of people’s voting rights and for this year’s Lok Sabha poll results to be declared in a fair and transparent manner. They also demanded for the Election Commission of India and the Supreme Court to ensure that democracy and the Constitution are upheld. Further, they urged the President of India call upon only the alliance formed before the polls that has won the majority to form the government and not permit horse trading to prevail in any way.
