MADURAI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case towards the Madurai-based NGO, Centre for Promotion of Social Issues (CPSC), and its programming unit, Individuals’s Watch, on fees of misusing international funds. Henri Tiphagne, government director of Individuals’s Watch, has termed the case a ‘vilification’ try.

‘Stop use of FCRA to repress dissent’

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked the Madurai-based Centre for Promotion of Social Concerns (CPSC), and its program unit People’s Watch, under Sections 120B (Punishment of criminal conspiracy) and 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as on charges of violation of the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act (FCRA), 2010.

According to the FIR, the CPSC is a trust formed through a trust deed with the objective of all-round welfare of the socially, educationally and economically downtrodden people of the country.

PUCL strongly condemns the registration of FIR by the CBI against Centre for Promotion of Social Concerns (CPSC) and its initiative, People’s Watch on 6th January 2022 for alleged FCRA violations of the year 2012, and raids conducted by CBI officials at their office in Madurai on 8th January 2022.

PUCL expresses serious concern over the increasing criminalization and denial of permissions under FCRA to civil society organisations working on democratic rights, environmental rights, civil liberties and social justice issues in the country.

Based on a complaint dated July 22, 2014, by the then director in the ministry, AK Sinha, the economic wing of the CBI has booked the organisation for FCRA violations
