UN Special Rapporteur highlights vulnerability of human rights defenders in India

At the conclusion of her assessment mission to India (11-21 January 2011), the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders Margaret Sekaggya addressed a press conference on 21st  January hosted by the UN Information Centre in which she presented her preliminary findings after extensive meetings with government officials and human rights defenders in New Delhi and in the states of Assam, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Orissa and West Bengal.

The Special Rapporteur observed the need for the National and existing State Human Rights Commissions and all stakeholders to do much more to ensure a safe and conducive environment for human rights defenders throughout the country.

The Special Rapporteur also voiced her concern at the arbitrary application of security laws at the national and state levels which directly affects the work of human rights defenders.

The Statement of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Margaret Sekaggya, as she concludes her visit to India released to the press at 4 pm on 21st Jan 2011 at New Delhi.
